Testing a thermocoulpe

Hello

Can someone please explain how to properly test a thermocouple( where to put probes) as have just been told what college told me was ******, I have been putting 1 probe on end of thermocouple and other on copper outer sheath.

IF you are putting your probes on the cold end ,you are correct!

Meter should be set to m/v range!!
