The Godfather!

I have been asked to be Godfather to my little nephew. (He's 6 months old now )

What does this entail? What do I have to do at the Christening?

So far all I know is that I have to buy a suit, and I'm not allowed to drink too much at my pals wedding do the night before

Any pointers would be great

You have to promise to make sure he is brought up as a good Christian

you also have to give him a present at every christmas and birthday until he's left school (or thereabouts), visit regularly, and press a fiver or something into his grasping fist.

As far as I know, most godparents fail to do the job.

R F Lighting - I believe the original function of god-parents was to ensure that the child was brought up in the Christian faith and to ensure its wellbeing if anything ontoward should happen to its parents before it was grown up. Regarding the ceremony, some churches require one of the godparents to hold the child at the font while it is being 'baptised' and to make appropriate responses to questions on behalf of the child like 'Do you renounce the devil....' Mostly one of the parents now hold the child at the font but the godparents are still required to answer 'I/we do' to the question about renoucning the devil, etc.

or you can do the job properly, and be his godfather/favourite uncle, watch him grow up, keep in contact and be there if he needs you or sometimes needs an adult word of advice thats not from his parents to set his mind straight on things. Very satisfying.
