Hi Guys

Have been quoted £3000 + Vat to plaster my new bedroom and onsuite.Just to plaster, plasterboard is another £1600 +.

Rough size is 8m x 2.6m and its vaulted so 3.5 - 4m high. this also includes the ensuite most of which will be tiled so not much plastering in there.

Hope the details sre not too vague, what do you think?

TIA

On the offchance that this is a serious question, £3k is somewhat steep.

When you say new bedroom, is it in a loft conversion? It's biggish & awkward with high vaulting but the price seems very high indeed. You could dry line a small housing estate with £1600 worth of plasterboard, are you sure the price doesn’t include specialist boards & insulation?

Is the builder doing anything else? How many quotes did you get? 3 should be the minimum to get a good comparison!

Hi Richard,

Its a extension a bedroom and ensuite on top of a garage and no, its just standard stuff the insulation is an extra £400.

Its very difficult to guess i know ( i get this all the time) but how many days just to plaster this area? i appreciate its difficult to do but the quote still seems excessive.

We are in a delicate situation as its a friend doing the extension so we didn't get anymore quotes, i guess we should have

is your builder named dick turpin by any chance?i think your having your pants pulled down!the last house i spread onsite payed £1800 labour, three beds an the garadge lid,do the maths m8!

Get a few more quotes from other plasterers,,,, don't mention/discuss other quotes you've had either. That particular quote sounds a total rip off!!!

I guess Ken Dodd has gone into plastering.

when you got that quote. was the man wearing a mask, and on a horse?

£3000 would do an entire house from top to bottom.

Get some more quotes mate

So are you saying the PB cost is £1600 but the insulation is only £400? Something doesn’t seem to quiet add up.

Difficult to cost without actually seeing it but given the room size, awkwardness of the vault, I can’t see it going more than 3 days including the ceilings (assuming the boards are up). Even at a rate of £200/day, that’s still only around £600 + materials I cant imagine would add more than a couple of hundred & that’s probably being generous. As the others have said, get some more quotes in but be careful, not everyone that says they are a plasterer can actually plaster to an acceptable standard!

He hasn’t been overcharged by a heating engineer at some time has he or perhaps he just thinks you can afford it!

some buildrrs add 10% to the price given to them by the trades they sub in, sounds like his maths may have added 100% onto the price. even then that could be deemed expensive. I have a sneaking suspicion that your quote for all the work may make for some interesting reading....

Very restrained, dextrous!.
When I read 3K, I thought it must have been a pi**take. Thought the op was making a point about something and thus i replied to let him complete it. I'm as bemused as everyone on here to hear that this was a genuine quote (unless it includes building the brick walls first and putting a roof on it   )

To be honest i didn't think i needed too - a long term close friend! not just a bloke i say hello to down the pub.

I have payed else that looks excessive ( not a total idiot as im a self employed tradesman) this just lept off the page and i wanted some opinions before i spoke to him so thanks guys

No doubt he makes big money getting it to the plaster stage so isn't really interested in the work.
