My brothers boiler has been playing up. The pilot light is on the pump runs, I have changed the 3 port valve and the boiler thermostat but still no hot water or heating. The whole system is 25 years old and wondered if it could be the programmer in the airing cupboard. Please help as my brother is freezing to death and too tight to call an engineer.

Well he had hot water but no heating so thought it was the valve. After that didn't sort the problem thought it might be the thermostat as the boiler came on for a few minutes then went of. So changed that but does the same.

you Sure the pump is actually moving the water and not just allowing boiler to reach temp and shut down
Well the pump is working and there is water pressure in the heating system. Thought it might be the gas valve!! I undid the drain off on the boiler and water came out so it had water in it.

stick boiler stat to max when it turns off check for 240 at gas valve if there is you know gas valve solenoid operator is playing up and needs changing.
if no 240 it means stat has kicked in and you have a circulation proble

If the boiler lights theres no problem with the gas valve.

You ought to think about joining British gas.
They employ a lot of people who just change parts without actually fixing the problem!

Slug it is not unusaul for a gas valve solenoid to work for a few minutes then breakdown till power removed then work gain next time ,
