Hi,

I am tiling a bathroom floor for the first time using 60x30 travertine. I have lifted the previous floor tiles and am left with 12mm plywood which whilst solid, has gauges and bits off old adhesive from removing the old tiles. My question is how can I tile on this and make sure it is even.

The current plywood sits on top of floor boards and has both the bath and sink unit \ cupboard sitting on top. I therefore do not want to remove the old ply.

I intend to screw 6mm ply onto the current damaged 12mm ply. Would this be ok?

I have considered securing the 6mm ply with flexible adhesive to remove bumps etc then screwing as well. Is that sensible? Any help much appreciated

A coat of a wood smoothing screed like f.ball 700 , level flex or similar will give you a nice flat finish mate

Not much point overlaying with 6 mm ply unless you have a smooth surface to begin with..

Buy yourself a quality scraper, not a paint scraper but a good quality floor scraper, maybe £15 to buy, it will make light work of the residue adhesive and use existing ply.

The new adhesive should be appllied at about 6mm depth so if you have left tiny bits of old adhesive (1 - 2 mm) this should be fine...Make good with what you have in place already ...
