Hi folks,

Simple question regarding connecting a timer extractor fan in the bathroom.

What cable is suitable for this set up?

1. White flexible 3 core and earth 1mm2 cable?

or

2. Standard Grey cable 3 core and earth 1mm2 cable?

The cable will be running in trunking from ceiling rose to fan isolator and fan isolator to the extractor fan.

Thanks in advance.

2) will be a lot cheaper than 1), and just as good.

You know it's notifiable....?

id say its fixed wiring and as far as i am aware you cannot use flex for fixed wiring, so you need to use t+e.

You'd be wrong there, steve.
You can use flex cable for fixed wiring as long as it meets the current carrying and environmental conditions for the circuit.
Wiring regs do not specify it.
Generally, most folk use twin&earth for fixed wiring cos its cheaper and easier to form & clip to backgrounds.

well i didn't know that. I've picked uo spurs off of rings before in flex, 2.5mm2 mind, but it don't just look right.

Thanks,

I have just notified the builidng control in my area and they will take 48 hours to approve.

Do i have to install a 3A fuse between the fan isolator and the fan?

Is this part of the 17th edition or is it just a requirement by the manufacturer?

Thanks,

If that's what the manufacturer's instructions say.

If it's the latter then it automatically becomes the former as well...

Ummm....

If you don't know how to change a fuse, should you really be DIYing this job?

I am not going to be doing this job myself but will get a sparky.

I am just buying all the stuff before he arrives.

As i need to install a 3A fused unit, i am looking at where i can get it.

So far no luck.

any ideas?

You can get a "3A fused unit", AKA FCU or fused spur, from practically any DIY shed. Ask for a fused spur and they'll probably know what you're talking about.

That said, if you honestly are employing an electrician then this is the sort of part that he will probably have kicking around in the van, so I'm not sure why you'd want to buy everything beforehand.

I thought the FCU or fused spur only come as 13A standard?

Does that mean you can simply replace the 13A fuse with a 3A fuse?

Does this explain why i cant located a 3A FCU?

They usually come with a 13A fuse pre-fitted (which personally I find annoying, people just leave the 13A in regardless of the load) but your sparky will have plenty of 3A fuses that he can use in the FCU.
