I am about to lay 450mm square ceramic floor tiles onto a screeded base in my kitchen. I am going to use BAL self mix adhesive and on the bag it tells you to use a solid bed of cement for floor tiles. Is this necessary or would a notched cement bed work just as well?

to notch or not to notch?

Using a notched trowel will give you a solid bed when the tile is applied. Use a U notched trowel like the one half way down this page. http://www.tradetiler.com/acatalog/Trowels_.html
