I think it comes down to the difference between conjunction and disjunction. Just because you say you do one thing doesn't mean that you don't also do another thing.

The bloke followed him all through the train station abusing him, he deserved a smack, if the bloke had knocked Tommy out all these lot would be happy with that no doubt.
