Can anyone offer some advice or considered opinion. I'm still on the quest for better frost protection in my loft.

Fitting trace heat to the pipes will cost between 300 and 500 pounds. A plumber has suggested using a 2kwh convection heater in the loft instead (30 pounds).

Am I wrong in thinking that a convection heater (running sometimes unattended at nights and some weekends) in the loft is more hazardous ( as a fire risk) than the trace heating option? I know the convection heater will cost more to run even if thermostatically controlled.

Trace heating has got to be the better option hasn't it?

A convector heater in the loft is stoopid.

Quite likely all the heat will float straight up and out the rooftiles and your pipes will still freeze.

How about taking a bit of initiative and making your own decision with the information you have been given ?
