Tracing Lost Relatives

I have decided to try and trace a relative last seen in th 70s, probably now deceased, I have a vague idea of their whereabouts when they dissapeared.

Has anyone been throught this procedure and got any tips, I have been looking at Ancestry Uk advertised on this site and wondered if it is worth subscribing
