Tradesmen not interested

None of these were contacted due to a personal recommendation, they all advertised either online or in the free local business guide.
We are hoping to move to a different area in the next 12 months so we may well just give it our own annual hack and leave it for the next owner to sort out. It just puzzles me why no one even bothers to reply or turn up when they say they would.

Leaving the door wide open for negative reviews imo. Especially if they advertise as no job too small.

There have been cases where I've needed three quotes - i.e. shared communal repairs - and getting a "stupidly expensive" quote from someone who really didn't want to do the work would have been more useful than a "no thanks" in those cases.

"No thanks" is still more useful than people who just disappear. I've had a couple of cases where I've found myself getting angry about a vanished tradesman, and then wondering if he's actually in hospital or dead or something.

This my perspective on turning jobs down face to face, the customers expression is either one of sadness then I feel bad, or they get annoyed, either I could do without, so it's a phone call.

Truth of the matter with my slightly undiplomatic refusal was, I didnt want the job, I dont want to be a busy idiot which that job leant itself to, the customer was very demanding from the outset "not excuses" just traits that turn me off.

There is absolutely no point in sending an expensive quote, if you dont want the job, dont price it, just refuse it.

A little known fact about being Self Employment it is as stressful as hell, im not going to waste my precious time quoting a job I dont want, I could be in the Gym or cycling, or down the pub relaxing.
Life is short dont waste it on wasteful endeavours.

Thinking about it more, I do agree it wastes less time if you just refuse it, I guess the trick is a diplomatic refusal.

I also think customers should not be allowed to negative review you for simply refusing a job, that is your right. One thing you can do about this is have a mechanism which encourages (Google) reviews in general, which if you're good, should be positive and outweigh any rogue negative ones. I do read Google reviews when looking for services. It could just be an encouragement to place a review on your invoice.
