Trimming Doors Without Power Tools

You pay good money to get it done right and stuff gets half-arsed because it would have taken them an extra or hour or two to do it right... now you need to live with it for years because it saved them an hour. I suppose that's why we're all on this site in that we will tend to have this mentality of doing things ourselves or right.

Yes, I got so fed up of paying for poorly done work, that plus the waiting on getting it done and all of the arrangements needed. Quicker, simpler, much cheaper and much less stressful - to do it yourself.

I got fed up paying for work being poorly done, so now I do it poorly myself for free :)

And you get to spend loads of dosh on lovely, lovely toys, I mean tools. Or is it just me that has a problem? :sneaky:

I have to admit that it's what makes up, in part, for some of the bloody awful jobs I have to do and some of the terrible working conditions I endure at times...

Had to laugh at this.
A few years ago my wife and I had gone to a car boot sale. I stopped to look at a certain type of stall selling old and new stuff, and my wife carried on walking around. Caught up with her about 15-20 minutes later and she had bumped into her daughter so as I approached I said "Hi XXXXX". If looks could kill I would have been dead!
"I never thought you were that kind of person and I certainly didn't think they sold that sort of stuff at these places!" She responded rather angrily.
"What are you on about?" I asked.
"You looking a girlie mags and stuff"
"Eh? What are you on about?"
"Mum said you had gone to look for some porn. I never expected that of you!"
I almost wet myself trying to explain to her that was her mum's jokey reference to me looking at tool stalls! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
My wife was in the background with a broad grin on her face.

At least you got to look at the tools, mine drags me away with a comment 'You have enough tools'.

Just tell her some tools get blunt or outdated so you need to replace them.

For Christmas & birthdays etc my wife just asks what tools do I need/want. She has just bought me an Erbauer reciprocating saw for my birthday next week as I said I need to trim an inch or so off the front fence pailings to allow the strimmer to cut under rather than against. I've seen it, I've held it and I've examined it but not allowed to use it till after next weekend. LOL

I know what you mean - my missus refers to catalogues as "tool porn'... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Never mind power tools, the advice in this thread now has me coveting expensive Stanley and Lie-Nielsen hand planes in all various sizes.

I could buy a few cheapish power tools for the price of some of these.

No, I have it too. I'm a veteran DIYer and over 40 years I have had a go at most trades (even in the past stuff I won't do much of now like full electrics - never done gas though). In that time I have purchased lots of "toys" and saved a fortune in the process. When I have a new project I just factor in any tools I haven't got that I need to do it. When I started I made mistakes all the time, but you get better the more you do and the more you learn.

IMHO the big difference between a Pro and DIY is that a pro already knows how to do something properly, and has the experience to do it right first time quickly and accurately. For a DIYer every project is an adventure to take time researching, but with care the end result can be very decent.

Just thought I'd share a bit of tool porn with you - on my desk this afternoon:

Not much help for trimming a door, though

can we have an honest opinion - is the hinge mortice plane a really useful piece of kit you use regularly?.... or tool porn??
