TV flicker at start up

Once (if) you fix it something else will probably go wrong, could buy another TV for £20 or even get one for free off Marketplace, bonkers.

Or, he could, with some luck, fix the TV he already has, for a few pence, avoid it going to landfill, help save the planet, plus end up with a warm, satisfying, feeling of achievement inside.

Perhaps the capacitor circuit only works when the TV is booting?

I'll get the capacitors replaced. Perhaps one of them have a dry joint.

The way capacitors fail is generally a gradual decline unless they get zapped with a big voltage. This expansion is due to the liquid or gel in the 'jam roll' formed by the charge plates drying out. As this happens over time, the charging/discharging process creates heat, and this accelerates the drying issue. It becomes a vicious circle until the point where the cap won't charge unless it's already warm.

I suspect that the flickering is related to the cap struggling to charge until it gets hot. Replacing the caps may well fix the issue.

Sure, except the saving the planet bit, another TV in the ground won't make a jot of difference to anything.

Nor will a gaming chair, buried in the ground ;)

But then, it's not entirely about saving the planet, but about the satisfaction of learning a new skill, for DIYs. You mentioned buying a used one for £20, the used one might not be a patch on the one he has, might come with its own issues, and might only last a very short time. Add to that, the time and effort needed to track one down, drive, and collect it, yet for the expenditure of just a few pence, plus a bit of time, her will likely fix the set he already has in his possession.

I've ordered the replacement caps, total £3.50. The seller advised me that they've done a lot similar jobs to what I'm attempting.

Will post the result in due course.
