Two cables from ceiling light socket

It's common to put a piece of brown sleeving or tape around that blue switch wire to identify it as live.

The recent photo shows there is already brown sleeving fitted to the blue switch wire, it is this wire that should go into the live terminal of the light fitting. If we had known this before it would have taken away the guessing of which blue wire goes into which terminal!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest I didn't think there was one on the blue wire, it's only when I came home that I noticed it. Sorry about that everyone!

Just to follow up - over Christmas I did successfully put up the spotlight I'd got (after getting some butterfly bolts too), thanks all very much for the help, it was much appreciated :)

It's common to put a piece of brown sleeving or tape around that blue switch wire to identify it as live (sic).
Not just common practice - it is a requirement to identify the phase (line) conductor correctly if not using the correct cable (twin brown, previously twin red).

Yes, but it's not always present, so people looking at a switch should be aware of the fact that they may well find a blue/black wire connected to a single-pole switch which has not been sleeved brown/red, but is a live (most likely switched live) and not a neutral.
