Two gang light switch - what am I doing wrong?

You have a blue sleeved brown which is Live at the ceiling, so perhaps the same at the switch, but not sleeved?

First of all do you have any test equipment?

Multimeter - volt stick - LED or neon screwdriver?

Yes, I have a volt stick, but have today bought a multimeter as well

Second, has it ever worked or is it new?

The way the switch was wired, only the light in the room worked. The light in the loft didn't work.

As per the photos - there isn't a blue sleeved brown wire at either the ceiling or the switch. The electrician wasn't particularly keen on marking wiring unfortunately (even though I asked him several times).

Is it 2 lights this switch should turn on and off?

Turn all the power off and test continuity between each brown and blue and brown and blue marked brown in the light.

So, this isn't your photo?

In the ceiling rose the brown sleeve is hidden but visible.

If you are convinced the cable marked SW is this cable

and the brown is the perm live you mentioned earlier, try joining the blue and brown together.


If that doesn't work check the voltage is around 230-240 at the points shown with red and black arrows. (meter set to AC volts at a range higher than 250V, such as ~300V or ~600V)

Do any other lights not work because of this?
