Two gang light switch - what am I doing wrong?

not ideal but very common and somewhat awkward to prevent in a congested space.

Tis easier is a more appropriately sized sleeving is used.

Is the right hand switch the blue and brown from the same cable? (Light 1)

I know in the photo it's not clear but, Yes it is - that light works.

What I can't get my head round is why the second light doesn't work if I loop COM to COM?

That's a shame, I really thought we were on a winner.

Tested between unknown blue and perm live - there is no voltage.

I might have to do a more thorough trace of wires.

The only thing I can think of is that the loft has alcoves - which have a wire running to them for in-cupboard lighting. Those are not fitted yet.

I know there is a wago junction box in the loft as well. So I'm hopeful all the wires can be traced back to there.

Just a bit frustrated because the first Electrician disappeared and I paid a second one to test all the wiring (making him aware of what had happened). He said it was all tested etc, when I contacted him about it not working he isn't responding. So now I have to pay a third to come sort things out if I can't manage it myself. Nightmare!

I feel your grief, I have been 3rd, 4th, 5th on a job and have to struggle to reverse engineer back through successive botches.

Unfortunately it looks like your unknown cable has not been connected at it's source.
If it's difficult to trace what's there; could it be easier to run a supply to light 2 from a known good L&N?

If no voltage, perhaps the blue is live and obviously same potential. Test them both reference to cpc/earth.

It might also be worth testing WITH THE POWER OFF at the consumer unit for continuity (resistance or kΩ on your meter) between the unknown blue and all 5 of the other wires and earth then repeat with the unknown brown - making 12 readings, a rough table like this stop you losing your way. From what you have written so far I'm guessing the table will be empty, but it may show us something.
