I used to hope that things might change when Putin goes. But I get the impression now that whoever succeeds him will be just as bad or worse.

I meant, after what Putin has done by invading and taking some of Ukraine, it is unlikely that the Western powers that be are thinking 'yeah we can leave Russia as one big nation because it poses no threat'.
