The C/H in this 1920 house is running on HEP2O with a WB Combi boiler which is oversized for the present radiators we have a BIG full height cellar and two tiled rooms Kitchen and Bathroom which are rather cold especially ATM SWMBO has asked can i/we put in underfloor heating for these rooms. We have from the top down ceramic tiles laid on 1/2" ply which was heavily screwed to the old floorboards and the joists. A 'friend' has suggested we just run 15mm HEP2O pipe in between the joists and then add 4" of foil backed Kingspan insulation beneath the pipes and slipped in between the joists to send the heat up and not just heat the cellar. The two rooms are adjacent so it would be easy to run the pipes through both rooms on the one circuit. Also it would be easy to add two 22/15 mm T's to the main C/H circuit as the boiler is underneath the bathroom. I am wondering about how to control this circuit (temperature wise) and if course is this a sensible idea as well. I was not wanting to go down the all signing dancing underfloor heating system with a motorised pump valve manifold thermostat route unless i have to.

Ideas advice suggestions please

thanks in anticipation

kindest regards

so running 15mm pipe in between joists in a 1920`s house with floor boards,1/2" ply and tiles on top?

what do you think?

The floorboards plus ply is too thick a covering for underfloor heating to work effectively. Also the system would require independent controls of th etype that you wish to avoid.

Therefore, by all means put insulation between the joists, and get some larger or additional radiators installed.
