I have been digging trenches for foundations. They are getting flooded as there is water coming in from a small localised area. This area is beneath next doors extension so I am guessing there is burst pipe somewhere beneath their extension. The problem is the house is let and the owner basically doesnt give a toss as long as it doesnt effect his house which it doesnt seem to be. I can pump it out but what is the building inspector going to say, will he allow me to continue or is there sometihng additional I will have to add to the foundations where the water comes in ?

I'm no expert but I would imagine that he'll be forced to care, as his leak is affecting your property. Please keep us informed as to the progress of this - interesting post.

perhaps you could point out that his leak will errode the soil and..............

Doesn't care hmm?

Just grass him up to your Water Undertaker, then you'll see if he starts caring.

we too have recently dug a foundation in close proximity to an existing foundation. this also allowed a steady ingress of water flow into our trench, but was due to geology as opposed to a leak.

we are building a foundation in a clay substrate, so it is fairly normal for any rainwater to find its way down along side existing footings and into any hole that is dug along side these concrete footings.

the water is just taking the easy route thats all.

I had the building inspector around and he has passed the trench. He wasnt too bothered about the water ingress saying it was normal in my area and has seen worse. So I imagine it is geological rather than a burst pipe. Although it did come in for 2 weeks almost non stop.
