Underground leak - responsibility

I've dug a trench in the front garden and exposed my water main.

There was a leak in the lead about six years ago and the water supply co. dug it up and put blue plastic to about 6ft inside the front boundary.

I now discover that the joint between plastic and lead is leaking badly.

This has resulted in a huge water bill (we're on a meter btw).

It seams unreasonable that we're expected to pay for the lost water as a result of their poor workmanship.

Perhaps this is more legal than plumbing, but would anyone think that the water co. could be held responsible for the bill?

Probably shouldn't have dug it up yourself, as they could say that you disturbed it ( you know what it's like!! ) but yes, I do think it's their responsibility. Get 'em back ! 8)
