I know that U2 lintels can be used as (100x145mm) or (145x100mm).
Either side up, however is there still a top and bottom for each way?
Or can they be placed in any of four orientations?
Hi nick, not sure sure what U2 refers to but if it's a concrete lintel and not annotated (TOP - as they don't seem to be these days) install it so the steel re-bar is at the bottom of the lintel. If it's in the middle - either way up, obviously.
Well the U stands for universal and I believe the 2 indicate the lintel can go two ways up.
There are not many good picture of these on the web however they have two re-bars. In the middle of the shorter dimension and equal distance about 1/4 in form each end in the longer dimension.
Yes, it's doubly symmetrical, so it can go in any of four orientations. Although bear in mind that capacity will be lower if used 100 high by 145 wide, rather than 145 high by 100 wide.
The manufacturer should be able to give load capacities for both orientations.
