First born's car.

On my drive.

Not going to be used for months (he's overseas).

Taxed and mot'ed.

Struggling to SORN it, as he doesn't know where the log book is , and he's on the other side of the world.

Can I still insure it as "laid up" or, by dint of it not being SORN, does it have to have "road going insurance"?

Thanks in anticipation (y)

He's on the other side of the world, being a pain in the arse, and I have better things to be doing than pizz-arrising around.

What is the answer to my question?

When you insure a car, you have to select how many miles you do a year. There's usually something like less than 4,000 miles. There isn't an option for zero. So that's probably the answer to your question.

My guess is that if it can still be driven on the road i. e. not SORN, it will have to have at least third party, so that others will be covered should they come to harm.

If it's registered in his name, then leave it to him to get it insured.
Some insurance companies won't let you unsure it anyway if it's not yours

You could check online by searching "laid up car I Durance UK" I think it was.
You can go through the questions on their website and see if it specifically asks for SORN, and even call or chat online with the insurance provider

He's a big boy now. Let him sort it. There will be a fine involved if he doesn’t so it’s up to him.

He can't. He's in Australia and reckons he cannot access the site.

I've told him to use a VPN, but that's beyond the limits of my IT knowledge.

In the end, I'm paying second-born to deal with first-born, and sort it out

You can SORN using the logbook or the tax reminder.
Or you can ring DVLA and do it over the phone
