We have just had some lovely uPVC sash windows fitted but they did not come with shark fin restrictors, as we believed they would. The window company has said they have ordered some and will try to retrofit them but they admit to never having done this before! Does anyone know if this is possible and if so how they need to go about doing it? Worried what state our windows will look like afterwards so would like to give them some tips if possible. Thanks.

After supplying a job we had to go out to and retro fit shark fin restrictors to when our customer decided they did in fact want travel restrictors (nightmare to fit after the steel is in the sashes.) Now we fit as standard.

They'll need to drill a series of holes through the steel reinforced profile, then file to a smooth rectangle. Then the shark fin restrictor will sink in and they will be screwed in placed behind the glazed unit. The main problem is there is hardly any overlap between the edge of the restrictor and the main body that sinks into the sash, so when drilling you need to be really careful.

The sashes should always be steel reinforced on sash and case windows, if it's not the job is easy mind you.

Thanks very much for that. We were a little disappointed that they didn't come as standard to be honest, as that was the impression we had in the first place. Do you know how much one of these restrictors costs and roughly how long it should take to fit one? The window company want to charge us £25 per restrictor (that is what they say they cost to get) and think it will take a long time to do each window so we are currently negotiating on who will be taking the brunt of the cost!

If you didn't specifically ask for them then asking you for £25 per restrictor isn't too bad, although if they showed you a sample and it had them on you have a good argument. The ones we done we retro fitted them for nothing and basically took it on the chin even though the customer never asked for them. Made sure they went on them all as standard from then on.
