UPVC UNION Monarch lock - how to remove and replace handles,lock and cylinder

I attach a picture of the lock with the parts labeled A thru G (as I do not know

the technical names for some of the parts).


Can anyone please tell me:

1. How do I remove the handles C and E? I have taken out the screws inside the handles,

but when I try to pull the handles, they do not come off the spindle. What else

have I got to do in the correct order, after removing the screws?




2. How do I replace the handles C and E, so that they work correctly?. When I

screwed back on the external handle C, it now turns 180 degrees without opening

the door or throwing the locking bolts. Note that this is part of a multi-point

lock system on the door with additional bolts top and bottom.


3. The thumb press D, does not work properly and is coming away from the lock

because the screw F is loose and is no longer holding B, the vertical aluminum

strips, close to the lock. Is it possible to repair this i.e make the screw F

hold the strips B tight again, or has it got to be replaced? If replaceable what

is the correct procedure for doing so?


3. Can the cylinder be replaced with thumb turn one as per

First things first you need to get to grips with removing the handles tightening the screws and putting it all back together to see if this cures any of the other problems.
The handles are clipped into the black tabs top and bottom. The clips are amazingly strong! You need to get either a very stiff scraper or better yet a chisel behind the handles (just to the sides and above/below the clips) and lever them off. It will feel like something is going to snap but then they will just pop off.
You mad want to put some cardboard or a cloth against the door edge behind the chisel to protect the door from scratching.

However, I also need to know how to ensure that I put the handles back on in the correct sequence/manner, i.e. they operate the multi-point locking system correctly. At the moment after taking out the external handle screw, I did something else wrong which has resulted in the external handle now always turning 180 degrees, and the multi-point locks only coming out halfway when I pull the internal handle upwards.

Can you tell me also the correct procedure for re-installing the handles after I have taken them off as I do not want to make the situation worse.

The internal and external plastic clips are screwed to each other through the door, Once those screws are tightened the handles just clip back on. A quick tap with a hammer (using a block of wood to avoid damaging the handle) and they will clip back in.

As I say you want to do this first and try everything again to see what problems are left.
If you have damaged the locking mech you may be better off getting a new door as those doors are an absolute swine to repair the mechanisms.

All I did before was remove the handle screws. I then tried to pull the handles off and when they did not come away, I turned the handles around and the finally found that the external handle turned thru 180 degrees after I had re-installed its screw.

I will do as you suggest, but the problem is that in then taking the handles off, I may then find that I cannot lock the door afterwards. If this happens I will then have to come and tell you that here and ask again for the procedure to put the handles back on and in the meantime the door will be unlocked and open to anyone to come in during the night, as I wait for your answer. Please can you tell me the correct steps I should follow to put the handles back so that at least this scenario does not arise.

As I said they handles just clip back on (assuming you have as you said loosened the grub screws on the inside edge of the handles). Taking the handles off and popping them back should not cause any more problems than you currently have.
We just need to know what problems are being caused by the loose screws (handles) before we can diagnose anything else.
