US tarrifs. 10% U.K., 20% EU.

Because if we were still in the EU it would have been 20%.
But as denso pointed out the tariff is on the businesses not the country or the eu. So it is entirely possible that the UK would have been excluded even if we were still in the eu.

The point is we don't pay any tariffs, never have. It's the American importers who pay.
Doesn't work like that in reality though, does it. The importer pays, but if the price goes up so much the importer doesn't want to pay the increased effective price, the supplier has to cut their price to offset the tariff increase.

I was refuting a claim that we pay out more when tariffs go up. We don't.

Tariffs may hit sales, or not. Not really the point.

But will suppliers have to cut their prices to offset the tariff increase?

Trump has imposed tariffs on most of Americas major trade partners so USA businesses only have domestic suppliers as an alternative.........and that is not terribly likely for most supplies.

If suppliers refuse to cut prices what is the American business going to do?

my guess is that American prices in the shops will shoot up

I feel sorry for American businesses right now, they are in for a very very difficult time, we have a global economy and supply chains are complex, parts are ordered from all over the world, in many cases switching suppliers is just not possible in the short term

Its just to get everyone rushing to do a deal, that they don't want to do, to come of his naughty list. Its his only negotiating style - show you what bad looks like, so you are happy with less good.

it will be interesting to see how this plays out as Trumps tariff argument that is based on trade deficit is straight from Project 2025

Also Trump wants to fund tax cuts for corporations from tariffs:

"U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing a plan to explicitly use revenue from higher tariffs on imported goods to help pay for extending trillions of dollars in tax cuts,"

we should definitely increase tariffs on live pigeons
It's a very odd list. I wondered if it was everything we don't import.

Why would you import horses for slaughter? I don't recall butternut box having a rodeo horse option on the menu.

Some French run / affiliated island is now the highest tariffed place in the world

99% tariffs

They sold 6 million $ in exports to the US and imported FA

:giggle:

How are Uk cars with Chinese batteries going to be classified ??

Its just another day in import/export paperwork hell.

I don’t think Trumpf has any intention of negotiating other than from a position of complete strength. Trumpf’s next move will be to further increase tariffs in retaliation for the EU and China’s response to their imposition
