I was thinking about fitting a wood burning stove but I think the cost of getting the specialist flue fitted will pop my budget.

To compromise I was wondering if I was to buy a reclaimed fire place if I could use that? I know that the chimney would need a sweep and how easy would it be to remove the flue fitted for the gas fire?

If I was to buy a fireplace would I be able to have it blasted back and have it treated with a high temp powercoating or would it need to be just blasted and wire brushed?

Just blasted and "Zebo"ed ought to do it. There are plenty of black grate polishes on the market again.

Woodburning Stoves in the UK have to be fitted and Passed off by a HETAS registered Engineer these days (all part of Part L1 Blg Regs)

ALL HEATING APPLIANCES HAVE TO BE NOTIFIED TO LABC OR SELF CERTIFIED BY ONE OF THE RELEVENT WORK NOTIFICATION SCHEMES

Not in Scotland, where the OP lives.

Davy, the biggest issue is the condition of your existing chimney, if it's a Class 1 (Brick & lined) one?? Some are still in good nick & it can be checked by a camera - after the removal of the gas liner. have a look in Yellow pages, plenty of guys doing chimney inspections.
