I have now bought a Huawei Mediapad X2 from Amazon in Germany.
The rules state that VAT can either be charged at the rate applicable in the country where the item is shipped from, or the country where the item is being shipped to.
When I queried why I was being charged UK VAT, I got this response:
Dear Mr Simon,
Thank you for a pleasant conversation we just had.
Hope I was able to assist you over the phone with the information.
The system is still processing the situation, as you country has left the European Union,
and unfortunately, the VAT is still being charged.
Hopefully this will be resolved very soon. Thank you for understanding.

So the rumours are true: we HAVE left the EU!
