Vent half way up the wall (old house)?

This is as much curiosity as anything, but does anyone have any idea what this vent could be for?

Its to the right of the bay window you can see in the picture. The bay window section appears to have been added on to the property at around 1885ish and the vent looks like it could be about this age so I am presuming it was fitted when the bay was built.

There is nothing on the other side other than the corner of the inside wall and as that room would have been a formal sitting room I doubt it would have been ventilating in cookers or heating equipment.
