Vertical Big old pipe in the middle of garden

I was in the middle of leveling my garden when I came across a big metal pipe. I dug a little around it but I really can't figure out why it's there !

It looks empty...

Any ideas are welcome! Thanks

The whole is about one foot deep

Not sure, I live in south London (Sutton) it's firm on the ground

could be the remains of a host of things. maybe an old building and its plumbing? try to dig down to see where it goes. what is the diameter?
