Volkswagen radio fault

Hi all, I have a 2007 Volkswagen passat, SDI 2.0 litre.

The radio has suddenly stopped working, the facia will light up but won't turn on. The lights will also go off after a while. This isn't something that has developed but has happened suddenly.

Any thoughts?

I would check that it has both 12v supplies on it, one permanently live and one ignition switched, if it has the radio will be at fault, a second hand one from the scrappers would be the answer. I was an electronics engineer for 50 years but I wouldn't attempt to repair it.

Out of interest, did you cover valve audio amps ? I might have some questions regarding one - when I get round to it. I was wondering where/who to ask

Yes Nige, I cut my teeth on them, a couple of friends of the same mind and I used to build amps to try and outperform each other. We also sold Leak, Quad and similar when I started work - all mono of course. Fire away and I will do my best to help as long as it doesn't involve any maths.
