Hello

I don't know if anyone can help.

Mum and dad had 10ft conifers around there garden as a wall as such, this has been there for 25 years plus. This has now died and they have decided to put a nice wall there, 6ft piers with a 4ft fence between each pier round the garden. This is on an edge of a path which surrounds the back garden, next to a cup de sac.

It's pretty much finished but some nosey Parker has now said that's a bit tall.

What is the legal stuff with this as we can't see there being an issue as its just been improved and at a shorter height

Ta

Thanks. Why would a neighbour question it though? That's the worrying bit when it's costing £3-4000 (it's a big wall)

Because they are nosey gits.

It's nowt to do with them - ignore em.

Build your wall.
As long as it's not adjacent to the highway - go for upto 2m.

If it's next to the footpath of a highway then you may need to consider visibility splays also?

Taken from Planning Portal - 'You will need to apply for planning permission if you wish to erect or add to a wall if it would be over 1 metre high and next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway); or over 2 metres high elsewhere'.

Just spoke to our district planning dept and they say you need planning permission for a wall next to a path and highway....rediculious when it's replacing a 10ft hedge to a 6ft wall. Will just have to see if people put a complaint in as its pretty much finished

If its a footpath to which the public have access, then it's a highway, and the 1m rule applies.
However, are there any similar-height walls/fences in the vicinity, when adjcent to footpaths?
If you get a visit from the council Gestapo, they may threaten this, that and the other, but don't be bulldozed into doing anything.
