Hi everyone.

About to undertake a loft conversion.

New floor joists will go on to existing wall plates. However these are all out. I can’t pack the new floor joists higher due to shear point on timber.

Can the existing wall plate (4x2) be notched at points say 0-30mm to allow new floor joists to sit level.

Thanks!

Can you not use packers and shape the joists around tne rafters using thicker ( wider) joists if necessary?

That reads like the underside of the new joists will be the same level as the underside of the existing ceiling joists, normally there would be a gap to allow for a bit of sag in the new floor joists, to avoid the existing ceiling bowing or cracking.

Using packers would sit the floor joists higher, meaning more timber would be cut off.

I have to batten on the underside of the rafter to allow more insulation. Would it be an idea if the tiles are removed to batten on top instead, so packing could be used under joists?

Sorry, how do you mean shaping floor joist around rafters?

The house is a building site so we are taking out the old ceiling joists as it’ll be easier to install everything

Some pics would help

Hang them on jiffys - lower the bedroom ceilings a bit - the roof insulation eats into the headroom.
