Tried to upload the images directly here but amazingly being told they are too big despite being <1MB, so here's a link
Looking to fix some tile backer to these walls ahead of tiling, as will be using some quite heavy tiles and this is a shower area. Plan currently is to use 6mm HardieBacker. Their installation instructions now recommend just a few beads of grab adhesive, then screws. However there's some really stubborn old tile adhesive and some gouges, so I'm not sure that's the best option for me. They do mention in one of their YouTube videos that if your wall is very uneven, you can fix the boards with a bed of tile adhesive followed by your mechanical fixings. Are these walls in a good enough state for that? I believe you're supposed to put your mechanical fixings before the tile adhesive sets, but would this not pull the board in to the wall and potentially cause me grief in the high spots?
The only other option I can think of is to go over the lot with some bonding or sand and cement to smooth things out, but I'd rather avoid the effort if I can!
