check a lamp works in the other socket leave alight
turn the power off at the mains
check the light has gone out and nothing works
replace the socket like for like reinstate power

Are you saying the plug wont physically push in all the way?
does it push in/work in other similar sockets?, if yes it sounds like something mechanical maybe has broken in the socket.
