Wall tie replacement in cellar

Presumably there is a bay window on the ground floor... I can see that the shape would transfer the ground "push" to near the corner/party wall @ each side . But the butress in yours and not next door suggests a later " fix" for something that moved :confused:

It used to be the practice to fill the cavity with concrete, up to DPC level, to give added strength below ground against the pressure of soil.

I wonder why yours was built that way :confused:
 
It is very much a mystery. The engineer couldn't say he honestly knew why it didn't fall down. But it hasn't. And it's been through a world war in which the house over the road was literally destroyed by a bomb.

It is slightly unnerving, to be honest.

The option of filling the cavity with concrete was also considered, but abandoned due to isses of damp.
