Every time I use my computer I get a warning bubble at the bottom that says 'Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low', and says that it will also boost my memory.

The computer is an Acer running XP with 256 mb of Ram?? Presumably its the 256 bit thats the problem? Can anyone explain in simple terms what I need to do?

i will not recomend anywhere to buy it, you choose, search on line (you cant then blame me that xyz down the road sells it cheaper than where i told you to go)

You need at least 1 Gb (just under 4 times what you have now) 2 Gb would be really good

go to youtube and "ask" how to upgrade ram / how to install ram

I presume you know what youtube is?

Ahhh, but it is virtual memory that is running low, not physical memory. Installing more physical RAM will help, but it is not actually the answer to your question. The correct answer is that your page file is too small.

However that is all willy waving. Yeah install some more RAM 256Mb is well inadequate.

Have a look at crucial where they have a memory compatibility guide. Dont't buy off ebay unless you are 100% certain what you are buying.

To get rid of the warning message you don’t actually have to add more physical RAM, although would be preferable.

Virtual Memory is a system whereby if you ‘dynamically’ run out of physical memory, the OS (Windows) will automatically start to use your hard disk as if it was physical RAM. Usually the amount of hard disk space allocated to ‘virtual memory’ (also known as page file) is pre set by Windows. However you can change this amount your self and allocate more hard disk space to be virtual memory.

Go to: Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory Change. Here you can increase the amount of virtual memory. Look at the options, make sure you have enough spare disk space, select custom and enter in new sizes.
