When she was around I wasn't that interested..........too young, too much going on for me.

I'm neutral on her........

But she Broke the strangle hold of the unions ( I'm not against unions the opposite, they should be there to protect individuals but not get involved in the country's politics.) holding the country to ransom.

She acted re the falklands.

And she kicked Europe in the teeth when they wanted our rebate back.
(contrast that with Blair's actions looking sidewards at the euro presidency,
and making sure doctors were rewarded with tons more wages for less work
what a cretin blair is.)

So whats the really bad things Thatcher did ? I'll say one thing I know she wouldn't have dreamt of fiddling her expenses !
Isnt it strange how blairs were shredded ?

Me personally think she did OK in her first two terms in office, i think the power went to her head, her downfall was pushing the poll tax through, i think we should adopt the Americans. (full stop)  idea of only having them do a max of two terms in office then put them out to grass.

If we had this system we would not have had to endure Bliar as long as we did.

I can't see what she did wrong.

We had a socialist explosion after the war, and some of it was quite "right" and sustainable, but some simply wasn't.

It seemed that some people in the country felt that the country could go ever onwards and upwards into socialist utopia, and when she smashed that dream with economic reality, people couldn't accept that the world wasn't as nice as they wished and made her a hate/blame figure.

she was evil to the core in the end

gave the police a whacking great pay rise to get them on side
she wasnt interested in getting the better off the miners she wanted them trodden into the ground

she didn't want a fair balance between company and unions she wanted them neutralised and ineffective

all she was interested in was private enterprise profits to shareholders and her friends at the cost off the working man

yes some unions where out off control but turning it on its head and removing the union power was just as bad but the other way

Caveat - I'm a big fan of Margaret Thatcher

So will admit to a prejuduced view. I was in the RN in the 80's and she did right by the services regarding pay and conditions. Opinion will always be divided on her and her policies of her government. To some she transformed the UK following (the first time) labour ruined the economy to others she devestated communities, coal and steel.
Above all else she was a stateswoman of true political conviction and did not change tack in response to every poll on public opinion a la Bliar,Brown and now Cameron. She said what she meant and meant what seh said

you did notice i said towards the end
i didnt like her at first but she got worse remember her own government was glad to get shot off her in the end ;)

Yes, she made some mistakes, but I think these were outweighed by the good decisions she made. Unlike most PMs, I believe she genuinely had the country's well being, rather than her own, at heart.

Yes, she certainly made enemies, not least in her own party. She was kicked out only when her party colleagues stabbed her in the back, probably because of jealousy. A lot of men feel threatened by a successful woman! Certainly, Edward Heath hated her.

Let's not forget that as our first, and so far only, female PM she had more balls than all the PMs who succeeded her. Can you imagine any of them sticking their necks out in the Falklands crisis?

Just my opinion, of course.

I'd go totally the opposite way - if they're doing a good job, why cut their tenure short? The American system? God knows how they get anything done at all, let alone the waste - just look at Obama's reign.
He and John McCain will have spent the best part of 2008 slugging it out for the presidency - 2 wasted person-years, and not far off a quarter of a billion dollars.
He then spent the better part of 2012 doing the same with Mitt Romney. So even a two-term president spends a year of their time in office trying to get re-elected, then how long are they a "dead man walking" at the end of their second term?

Firstly I'm no Thatcherite or conservative but labour opening the jobs to immigration betrayed the working man far worse than Maggie ever did surely ?? It's on record that they did it to get at the conservatives ( source is blaires speechwriter) but at the same time they kicked the working class in the goolies far worse that thatcher.
Gimme old labour any day than new labour and the third way !

The leftie socialist haters hate Margaret Thatcher because she reminds them they are wrong about everything.

Throughout the Sixties and Seventies, this country had been outperformed by every European economy. ‘Britain is a tragedy — it has sunk to borrowing, begging, stealing until North Sea oil comes in,’ said Henry Kissinger.

All hail Thatcherism.
