Are you being serious JohnD? Your knowledge is usually extensive, and I'd have expected you to know this.

The answer to your question is "yes", if the seat has been already been cut so far that it's too deep.

Not at all! I've tried the plastic inserts with mixed results, have decided it's less trouble not to mess about, just fit a new tap. Old taps that've been mended just seem to me to be old taps. Never used revivers but wondered about them.

Plastic inserts - yuk. My experience has been the same as yours. If time wasn't money I might be tempted, but they really are an attempt to eke out the dying gasps from a worn tap.

True - if the handle is plastic, then the splines might have worn.
