Eldest son wants watch for Christmas.

He has expressed a preference for a silver metal strap, but does not want a fussy or confusing face with lots of dials etc...

A plain analogue (probably black or white) face with hour, minute, second hand and date will suffice.

Kinetic or solar power would save having to wind or change batteries.

I have looked at a few brands on Watch Shop.

At the sub £50 end of the market there is Pulsar is owned by Seiko.

Limit is British but all their watches now have Japanese movements.

(all their watches seem to have batteries).

Then there is Casio

Lorus is another Seiko brand.

and Accurist.

Moving up there is

Sekonda

Rotary

and Citizen.

I know Citizen are pretty good: I have an eco-drive one ( http://www.watchshop.com/mens-citizen-eco-drive-watch-bm8475-26e-p99945668.html ) that came with a 6 year warranty and it is so far bullet-proof - almost literally!

Is there anything between these cheaper brands in terms of quality or are they all of a muchness?

Bloody hell secure in a couple of years he'll change it, buy one he likes to look at or he'll never wear it.

Give him the money and let him get his own. What's wrong with changing batteries? You can buy a sheet of about 20 batteries at Poundland !

Thanks guys.

Yes, he has a phone. He still wants to buy a watch.

Of course, we're going to get one he likes, he will choose it.

Nothing wrong with batteries. But, for me with my eyesight, changing them is near-impossible.

I was simply asking around to see if there was an opinion as to whether any of the cheap brands were better than the competition.

No worries.

Got a beautiful watch for my birthday last may. A present from the lesbians next door. I did a bit of work for them. I think they misunderstood me when I said I wona watch. :ROFLMAO:

Not worn a watch in years but I always thought seiko or timex were good workhorses for the money. Didn't break very often :)

why would you want to get your phone out of your pocket and unlock it whenever you want to know the time - bunch of weirdos!
Why would you want a phone that locks?
Mine cost £7.50 and shows the time at the touch of a button.

I guess I've always had a job where a clock is nearly always visible.

Guess so, I predict that some time in the future people will be able read emails, access a calendar, access their bank accounts and all sorts of other crazy things on there mobile telephones.

Just tell him Xmas is for giving, not receiving. I'm quite pleased with my £29.99 Sekonda watch, does the job .

I predict that one day people will be able to talk to each other on their cameras - honest, you wait and see - or, and hear.
