Water Main - Manhole

We are putting a conservatory up, and go right up to the edge of the water main man hole cover. Having looked into this, we now realise that we are likely to have to brick over about 3 inches of the bricks of the manhole. Can something be used to support it. We are only putting about 2 bricks in height on top of it. Can this be done or not, we know we don't need to put support over the whole of the drain.
Brickie coming next week to give us a quote and just want to be prepared for any bull --- he may try and give me.

Hi i understand from reading your post that your wanting to slightly build over a manhole?? unless im reading it wrongly???...you wont be allowed to do this. Im guessing there will be a dwarf wall in the new conservatory?, you will have to dig down for the foundations of this. cheers

is it a stopcock cover (4 inch square) or a drainage cover (2 foot rectangle) or a drainage grid?

Either way it needs moving. Or the conservatory needs moving. Not sure if it'd need to be a certain distance. And special arrangements must be made for any pipework under the walls.

Yes your are right, it is a B&Q self build 11ft by 9ft conservatory. It is full length glass, so no dwarf wall required, but we need to go down 2 bricks, and 2 bricks above for foundation. The small wall will run right along side the man hole, and above it the man hole cover will sit just under a lip of where the windows start. My thought was to put a support over the 3 inches of the manhole bricks, just to support it, with manhole cover over it. [code:1][/code:1]

Its a self build conservatory 11ft by 9ft, with full length windows, no dwarf wall needed. just 2 bricks down and and above. The conservatory wall runs right along side it, and the man hole cover just fits under a lip of the wall before the glass walls. Just thought I might need some support over the bit just adjacent to the man hole wall.

There are various types of inspection chambers, and that is what this sounds like.
It's Never a good idea to build over them.
get some advice from the local building control.

As others have said you may need to consider the position of the wall/ footings and/or move the man hole inspection chamber etc. moving a manhole is a lot of digging and work...but needs must. If its a self build conservatory im guessing your doing the work yourself and the footings/ foundations yourself??. With the uppermost respect if you were considering building over a manhole maybe a self build conservatory is beyond your experience at the minute?...it might be best to get a pro in to do the foundations work for you. Thanks, and Yes I am getting a brickie in, for the foundations, well beyond my means. We are building the conservatory ourselves, as brother got one last year, and put it up, so sorted there. Just wanted to get some advice, woman on her own and all that, before brickies come round for estimates.

Might be a good idea then to dig a small hole 1ft square, where the footings are going to be, until you reach think clay which could be 2ft or so down....this will give anyone calling round to quote an idea of how deep they need to dig down and also what type of soil there dealing with. So hopefully for you a more educated quote. Try to get 3 quotes or more... good luck.
