All of my pipes are either surface, and visible, or hidden by cupboards, boxed in. In the kitchen, I planned the runs, to be hidden behind cupboard, in the hall, I have two heating pipe drops, one either side of the door, with the boxing in carefully disguised.
I think that essentially now the norm, and probably has been for quite a long time. However, if one goes back a few decades, then pipes buried in walls (solid or 'hollow') were seemingly more common - and it's one of those which I once hit with a drill (fortunately, it was a thick-walled steel pipe, so I didn't penetrate it!)
