I'm getting some hardwood sashes made with double glazed units. Is there a way of calculating the counter weight I'm likely to need in advance?

I'm putting them into the original main frame and I'd like to order the lead weights from Mighton before the sashes arrive.

4mm glass = 9.8kg/m2

hardwood varies by species, eg sapele typically 620kg/m3

or get the company above to do it for you.

Simple scales such as the common bathroom type are good for weighting sashes and weights. It's even possible to do by guess work, weights for the top sash should be a little heavier than the sash itself and a little lighter for the bottom sash. One of the commonest reasons for altering the weights is changing the glass especially in older buildings. Many old windows were glazed with glass as thin as 2mm.
Easiest weights to use are the lead ones that are simply cut to size either by hand or by chop saw.
