Hello everyone just registered as I'm starting to renovate my 1890's mid terrace and I think this site is gonna be a huge resource for me.

First of all does anyone know what this is next to the front door? It's fed by a pipe from the floor and there's another, exit pipe, going back through the floor. I also have a CU under the stairs that's also ancient and will need updating so I'm lost as to its purpose. If anyone does know what this is then is it possible to get rid of/hide?

I'm no electrician and the most I will do is add a spur in the house so will be getting one of you professionals in!

Your picture is very, very dark.

It's a board supplier by the electric co at some time. To my squinting eyes it looks as if its a main cable in, fuse carriers and then a cable which I suspect feeds back as the supply to your house fuse board.

It's quite aged, I'd be tempted to ask the network supplier (DNO) to update the head.

Where is the meter for the billing?

Thank you for replying its very much appreciated and Apologies for the picture quality I hope this one is better for you!

The meter is next to the CU under the stairs as well. Just been told the light circuit needs a rewire as well as thats old and not currently earthed, something the house survey missed. Shaping up well so far lol!

Is there a second fuse board upstairs? It looks like one cable goes down in the conduit and then another into the wall - maybe to upstairs? Or even next door (not unknown)

It sure looks like there are 2 main fuses in the head anyway....

Yeah looking at it now that cable does dissapear into the wall but there's nothing like you mention upstairs unless its in the loft. The loft is pretty much inaccessable unles your a pigmy dwarf because the hatch is tiny.

Thanks for helping.

The item in question is the distribution boards cutout, it is property of your local electricity board. The lead clad cable is the supply in, the conduit going out will probably be for next door or could be going to your meter, the other cable exiting above could equally be the supply to next door or your meter.
If they both were going to your property there would be two meters.
