what depth is drylining

Hi all,

My plumber fitted a recessed shower valve into a brick wall in my bathroom.

As I am having the room drylined and skimmed, the plumber mounted the valve to protrude a set distance from the brickwork. This was to allow depth for the drylining (adhesive + 12mm board), skim (3mm), tile adhesive and tiles (approx 8 to 10mm). The shower valve came with a plastic cover that has markings for the finishing depth of the wall on it.

The plumber said that the drylining + skim will be about 30mm. Then approx 10mm for tile adhesive and tiles. So he mounted the valve face just under 40mm from the existing brick.

The plasterer is now working, and he said he is struggling to get the required depth on the drylining. He said normal circumstances would only be 5mm of drylining adhesive, total depth 5mm + 12mm + 3mm skim = approx 20mm.

Was my plumber wrong (he is very experienced) or is my plasterer incapable? I am yet to see the job for myself until I get home, but there is a danger that the shower valve will be protruding too far.

Cheers

Your plumber is more right, 20-25mm board bonding, 12.5mm board 3-5mm skim is what I would expect.

5mm board adhesive? - not dabbed, it wouldn't hold. Maybe your plasterer is using a new technique I have'nt encountered.

Praps best to wait for a grown-up to answer this one.

most skimmed dry lining or dot and dabbed boards turn out at 25mm from the masonry.

this is an average.

tile thicknesses however vary. some walls nowadays are furnished with floor tiles which can be thicker than wall tiles.

i would allow a minimum of 10mm for 'ceramics'.
