Hi All,

I recently moved into a house built in the 1960s, it has a steep drive. I have the original drawings which show the drive make up as “6 inches hardcore and 3 inches washed scalpings.” There is no mention of a asphalt or tarmac type layer, but there must have been one of the scalpings would have migrated down the slope.

Now there is a thin asphalt type layer with a sand finish, it is very grippy but starting to break up.

Any thoughts on what this is and how old it is?

I'm surprised how that's lasted
Looks like the old days of rip off cheap tarmac over days,
Knock on door, we have some left over tarmac, from job down road,,,,,,

I'd get quotes on either or all of
Paved brick
Loose stone
Ful tarmac
They have different build ups and all require that and the underneath to be dug up
If it does not flood or pool, you don't need additional drainage nor consider permeable.
Looks like you could have some nice flint there.

Lose stone with determination could be done as a home project

Good luck, keep us posted
Cheers,,,,,Q
