What have you been doing today?

Sitting in the car dealers playing silly games where the salesgirl goes back and forth to the manager telling me what they can’t do. Trying to get them down just a bit. Only offer so far is if I take one before the new reg so will come with a 25 plate and they will knock £550 off of the price. Not interested in that, looking for a 75 plate. I'm sure I can get something off.

Feck me, that was hard work! Eventually the manager came out of his office to talk to me. Said he couldn’t do anything on the price. To be fair, I had three offers lower than theirs but all would have involved a long trip to collect the car or a whacking great delivery charge that would wipe out most of the savings and my local dealer was only £90 more expensive than the next cheapest and I’d have had to go to Peterborough to get that price. This dealership was just two miles from me. I said if you can’t do anything on the price, what can you throw in for free? He offered me a £400 ceramic paint protection coating and scotch guard on the interior for half price - £200. I said I’ve come here to spend less money, not more! I held his gaze and he said, alright, I’ll throw it in for free. Deal done, we shook on it. I ended up getting near on £7k off the list price so I can’t complain - at least that will more than cover the next 4 years of the 'luxury' car tax. I might even buy a 4/5 year servicing package too, I’m done with scrabbling around under cars. Anyway, I filled in all the paperwork and told them I’ll sign it after Mrs Mottie has test driven it tomorrow and given it the thumbs up.

Test drove it, all fine, Mrs Mottie gave it the thumbs up so we placed the order. Going to take a bit of getting used to - all sorts of electronic wizardry on it. Something that keeps you in the middle of the lane, you can take your hands off and it drives round bends in its own. Speed warnings binging up, beeps when you go into a different speed zone, steering wheel vibrates and the brakes come on if you roll too near to the car in front in traffic, brakes came on when we were reversing out of a lane and a car was coming and that’s on a model a few notches down from the one we've ordered. Should get it on Sept 1st.

Many years ago I was refurbing a flat in St Johns Wood, sleeping on site under a dust sheet. One day a plumber came to do some work and said he was going to have a look in the charity shops, he said they were full of top designer name clothing and they sold them for pennies. I took the missus back at the weekend and she bought a couple of coats, she couldn't believe the stuff they were selling. Couple of weeks later there was a big article in one of the Sunday paper magazines, 'cheapest designer labels in London' or something like that, the shops changed overnight.
Some pretty damn expensive stuff in the charity shops near me. I saw these this morning - they having a larf or what?

The large, chain charity shops, do seem to have massively upped their prices, and their game, since covid, thought still bargains to be found. Generally, the best value, is to be found in the smaller independent charity shops. What amuses me, is the plain packets/ boxes of miscellaneous items, with absolutely no clues of what's in the box, or its purpose.

Had to rush over the allotment tonight to get some French beans for our tea. Hadn't been over for a couple of days and those bloody courgettes had had a growth spurt.

I put them on my front wall for neighbours to take and they were gone in 30 minutes.

Something that @Notch7 will like - my Costoluto tomatoes have started to ripen. These are but a tiny fraction of my crop. I’ll end up putting them towards the annual Hornchurch tomato fest. ;)

One other thing I picked up while over there - dead man’s beer! One of my plot neighbours died last year. I’ve helped his wife out with taking her rubbish down to the local dump when I’ve been going. She said she had some beers for me and I found these by my shed door. The best before date was 31.7.24 so I’m assuming they were Johns. She meant well though.

I was looking in the loft for something tonight and I came across a toy Mrs Mottie bought me for Christmas in 2004. A Robosapien. I know it was 2004 because I’ve looked it up and it was toy of the year in 2004. She says I pestered her for it. Anyway, it kept me amused for all of three minutes on Christmas morning. It went up in the loft until tonight. Of course, the batteries had leaked but I managed to clean the contacts up and popped up Sainsbury’s to get 4 ‘D’ type batteries and a pack if AAA's. Cost me £13.50 but I got it working again. It’s still shìt but it’ll be interesting to see what my grandchildren make of it when they come round tomorrow. I was thinking I’d put it on eBay as a retro toy but there’s loads of 'em on there and I’d be lucky to get the cost of the batteries back!

Witnessed a horrific thing today while out walking with a friend and her dogs. As we were rounding a corner, we heard the most distressing screams coming from a dog. We thought it was either being beaten or being attacked by another dog. When we went round the corner, we saw a young Labrador, screaming, spinning round and trying to bite itself, as if it had been stung by a bee or something with its owner trying to catch hold of her. It was then that I noticed it appeared to have 5 legs. At first I thought it was a snake locked on to it but as I ran nearer, I saw that it was impaled on a stick! I managed to catch hold of it and the owner pulled the stick out. It was about 2ft. long with a sharp end. The sharp end was covered in blood for about 3 inches. Thankfully no blood came out after the stick was removed so I think it may have pierced the flesh and gone in between the flesh and any muscle or soft tissue. It had entered under the front leg armpit. We walked with the owner back to her car while she was phoning her vet for an emergency appointment and the dog seemed fine although its tail was under which happens when they are frightened. We thought the dog must have run onto it while running through the trees or bushes but the owner confessed that she had been throwing the stick for the dog to catch and it caught up to it while it was still bouncing. I know you aren’t supposed to throw sticks for dogs although I did with our Susie but I’d never have thrown a stick of that length, especially if it had a sharp end. I hope the dog is okay.

how awful - will you find out how the dog is? let us know

A friend of a friend has something similar, dog running with end of stick in mouth (like a cigarette but stick size) stick caught in ground and pushed into dogs throat - dog survived but it cost them serious money (no insurance, think 15k was mentioned (and this was 10 years or more ago) that had to be painful
