What have you been doing today?

When the former MP Alan Johnson's mother died he was 13 and his sister was 16, the authorities attempted to put Alan into care but his sister fought tooth and nail against it, putting so much pressure on the local authority that they eventually gave the two children their own council flat on the proviso that they were visited once a week by a social worker to monitor them. He still refers to his sister as the biggest hero in his life.
That would make a great film, never heard that story before.

His books are great. In the book that covered his period as a postman in Slough, I recognised a lot of the names as being fathers of friends who were involved with the Union. I emailed him to say how much I enjoyed the book and the memories it invoked, got a lovely reply from him.

edit, I'd have considered voting Labour with him at the helm, social conscience but realistic, he did well for the postmen as a union leader, negotiating decent pay rises but not without increased productivity and efficiencies.

spent today chasing a leak behind a kitchen vanity for a customer who swore blind nothing in there had been touched in 10 years. turned out the push fit on the hot feed had been nudged loose when her grandson shoved a load of boxes under there last christmas. 20 min job once i could actually get my shoulders under the carcass, 2 hours of swearing before that trying to work out why the floor was wet two feet away from where the leak was

Just had a call from them. They have located a 25 plate Tuscon for me but it’s in Medway, Kent. They said when I take the Bayon back to Basildon on Monday, they will arrange and pay for a cab to pick me up from there and take me over the water to collect the new one plus arrange for the reverse when I return it. Nah, sod that, I said I’ll take the Kona so picking that up on Monday. Feck knows how long they’ll take to fix it though.
Picked up the Kona. What a lovely car. First impressions is that it’s just a tad smaller version of the Tucson. Still got all the same bells and whistles. I’d like one!
