Well-- it does have a very distinctive profile and it's one way of distinguishing it from the traditional Brit. Yale type cylinder lock I suppose. Probably really just because it sounds sexier.
well you might have a euro profile cylinder lock that uses a cylinder of the "euro" shape, or profile. (roughly pear shaped)
likewise oval profile cylinders or swiss profile cylinders (round).
