I want to get a new external front door. The current one lets all the outside noise in. Is compact particle board okay or should I go for real solid wood?

Solid wood will stand up to the weather, particle board won't.

Same for burglars.

Consider getting a new frame as well. Then it will have a good rubber seal all round to fit, and you can inject expanding foam between frame and wall to prevent noise leakage.

Thanks for the advice regarding a seal which is a great tip.

My flat is inside a building. So even if particle board is not appropriate for the outside elements, it is okay inside for sound insulating purposes such as when other tenants walk past my door. At the moment, I can even them whispering as they pass by. Really annoying.

In that case go for a heavy fireproof door. The extra weight, density and thickness will deaden noise, as long as you have no gaps round the door or frame. Modern frames have better heavy rubber strips than the ones you buy in DIY shops.

Wickes have some nice 4-panel and 6-panel fireproof doors at about £60. You will need 3 hinges, preferably lift-off ones. You may find it is thicker than your old door so will need fitting.

You may be required to have fire-and-smoke resisting intumescent strips in the frame, in which case get the ones with the furry pile which also blots out noise.

Thick carpet or a large doormat by the door will also absorb some noise.

Excellent. I'll make sure I order all of this before the chippie does his job.

Just out of curiosity, are high density particle doors not regarded as fire proof quality?

some

they have to be certified as fire-resisting

In my house I use 30-min fire doors, the Wickes 6-panel as they look very authentic when painted. I don't know if the requirement is the same in your flat. Perhaps you could phone your council's Building Control Office and ask. They may also require certified hinges, closer (I use Perko) and latch.

Perko, the devils final laugh on people.

Sh1te things, slam. Catch childrens fingers.

Are you sure you are not just hearing them thru the walls?
