Our oil burner is located in the garage and has a thermostat attached to it. However we also have a thermostat in the hall of our house and so I was just wondering what the one in the garage is for? We always have had the one in the garage turned up to the maximum and then just use the one in the hall to control the heat of the house.

It will probably be a frost stat and should be turned down to 5 degrees :)

I'd turn it down lower, the air has to get fffreeeeeezzziinnngggggggg cold before the boiler and pipes is anywhere near freezing.

But what is the disadvantage (if any) in keeping it turned up high? Will it use more oil?

Assuming you are talking about a stat on the garage wall (and not the one on the boiler) then:

the thermostat fixed to the wall (to detect low temperatures and fire the boiler) should be wired in series with a pipe thermostat (on the boiler return pipe to turn off the boiler when the water is up to say 30 Centigrade). Obviously you also need an auto bypass valve (if the system is S plan).

Yes, the higher it is, the more oil you use.
